6 Tips for Puppy’s First Night

  1. Your new pup may cry at night for the first few nights. He has never slept without his littermates and will need some reassurance.
  2. Your new puppy may not feel hungry the first night. Moving to a new home with a new family can be a little nerve wracking. Give him time and he will be eating like a champ again soon.
  3. You WILL need to take the puppy out to potty during the night at least once for the first couple of weeks. At his age he may not be able to hold it all night.
  4. There WILL be accidents. Any time a dog or puppy moves to a new environment there is a learning curve. Be patient with him and be sure to give lots of praise when he potties where you want him to. Try to ignore any accidents and not make a big fuss over them. It won’t take long for him to associate a reward with the appropriate behavior.
  5. He will want to chew things. Make sure you have appropriate chew toys on hand so you can easily redirect him when he chews something you’d rather he didn’t.
  6. Early socialization and beginning basic manners can start now. The sooner the better. Remember that consistency is key when training a new puppy. If he knows what to expect from you and what is expected of him he will be more comfortable and you will be a happier pet parent.
