Aussiedoodles 101

What is an Aussiedoodle?

What is an Aussiedoodle?

The Aussiedoodle is a hybrid, a mix of Australian shepherd and poodle. Our goal with the Aussiedoodle is to produce a dog that is highly intelligent, athletic, affectionate and allergy friendly. It doesn’t hurt that they are also beautiful.

Australian shepherds are brilliant working dogs, born to herd livestock. They are energetic, eager to learn, loyal and are problem solvers by nature.

Poodles constantly rank #2 on canine intelligence scales, second only to the border collie and are very adaptable to family life, though they can claim heritage as waterfowl retriever’s. The addition of poodle into the lines brings that allergy friendly coat, and a bit more laid back, even tempered charm to the mix.

A well bred and trained aussiedoodle is a highly intelligent, easily trainable, fun loving and social dog who does well in a moderately active home. They DO require training and structure to become their best selves but they LOVE to learn so its a win win.

01. Are Aussiedoodles Good Family Pets?

The short answer is YES! Aussiedoodles are known for their affectionate, playful nature and their strong bonds to their families. It is important thought to remember, like the Bordoodles, that they do come from herding backgrounds so its possible they’ll inherit some of the herding drive of their parent breed. Proper training and early socialization will go along way to controlling any herding behavior so be sure you get enrolled in training classes and keep your pup learning good manners from the start.  Overall aussiedoodles are:

  • RGreat with kids - Early socialization helps with introductions
  • RFriendly with other dogs - Ours are raised with several adult dogs so they get to practice social skills early in life
  • RCan live with cats - Again early socialization is key and we have cats at both of our homes so the pups are exposed to them pretty young.

02. Do Aussiedoodles Need a Lot of Exercise?

Like the Bordoodles, Aussiedoodles ARE athletic and energetic by nature but they don’t need to be exercised excessively. They’ll most often be content with a couple of good long walks a day, some training time ( it’s mental work and that makes them tired too) or a big backyard to play some fetch in.

They have enough energy and athleticism to keep up with just about any activity you’d want to try with them . Hikes, jogs, agility, flyball, rally, barn hunt, scent games, your Aussiedoodle can learn to love it and will be excellent at it! They’ll offer a great, fun way to keep yourself active but they are not typically a super high drive dog that HAS to have a job constantly or will destroy your house.

If you like a couch potato dog or a really low key dog, they are not for you. But if you are a moderately active family who likes to go on adventures, go for walks etc, an Aussiedoodle will be a great addition to that family.

03. Are Aussiedoodle Coats Allergy-Friendly?

The answer here is MAYBE. Some are and some are not. There’s a lot of misinformation about doodles being “hypoallergenic” but it’s simply not true. The truth is that no dog is hypoallergenic and each person’s allergies are unique. If you have strong allergies we highly recommend you meet the pups you are interested in first and absolutely that you let us know ahead of time so we can direct you to the pups who’d be most likely to work for you.

Generally Speaking the F1b and mulligan pups work well for those with allergies. The curlier the coat the better is also a good rule to go by. HOWEVER there is never a guarantee so you’ll be advised to handle the pup you are interested in and see in person how you react.

04. Is An Aussiedoodle the Right Dog for You?

Aussiedoodles are smart, active, social, highly trainable dogs who also happen to be very popular right now and are SUPER CUTE. That does not mean they are a good fit for every home though. It is so important, no matter what breed you are looking at, that you consider the breed’s temperament, energy levels, grooming needs, health etc and make sure that this dog will be a good fit for your lifestyle.

As mentioned, if you are super low key person who prefers a quiet, not so active lifestyle, these are not a good fit for you. IF you are moderately active, outdoorsy, like a dog who is smart enough to learn whatever you want to teach, and are committed to upkeep as far as the dog’s grooming and training needs, they can be an amazing addition to your family and the best, smartest dog you might ever have.
