How We Raise Our Pups
Over 20+ Years Experience Raising Pups With CareCarefully Selected Parents: The Foundation of Quality Puppies
Our breeding program is built on a foundation of health, structure, and temperament. Each of our parent dogs is carefully chosen to ensure they pass down the best qualities to their puppies.

Health & Genetic Testing
We use Embark Labs DNA testing, which screens for nearly 200 genetic conditions—both common and rare in our breeds. This ensures our puppies start life with the best possible genetic health. Additionally, all breeding dogs undergo thorough physical evaluations, including assessments of:
✔ Hips & elbows for joint health
✔ Patellas (kneecaps) for stability
✔ Heart & eyes to ensure long-term wellness
If a dog does not meet our strict health and structural standards, they are retired from our breeding program and placed in loving homes as cherished pets.
Temperament Matching: Creating Well-Balanced Pups
Temperament is just as important as health. We selectively pair our dogs to create puppies with calm, confident, and well-adjusted personalities.
- Balanced Pairings: We avoid pairing two high-drive dogs unless we are specifically breeding for sport or working dogs. Instead, we match an energetic dog with a more relaxed one to produce well-rounded puppies suited for family life.
- Confidence & Socialization: We do not breed dogs that exhibit excessive anxiety, extreme independence, or nervousness, as these traits do not make for ideal family companions. Instead, we focus on producing puppies that are affectionate, social, and adaptable.
By carefully considering both genetic health and temperament, we ensure that every puppy we raise has the best chance at a long, happy, and healthy life.

Raising Our Puppies: The Best Start in Life
Our work doesn’t stop with breeding. From birth to the moment they go home, our puppies are raised with care, love, and intentional training methods to set them up for success.
Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS)
We start Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) on day 3 of life, a scientifically backed method that helps puppies develop stronger immune systems, resilience to stress, and better cardiovascular health.
ENS exercises include:
- Gentle position changes (held on their back for a few seconds)
- Temperature stimulation (brief exposure to a cool towel)
- Light touch exercises (stimulating their paws and toes)
Studies show that puppies raised with ENS are more adaptable, confident, and stress-resistant as adults.
Early Potty Training: The Misty Method
Starting at 16–18 days old, we introduce our puppies to the Misty Method of litter training, which makes housebreaking easier for new owners.
- Designated Potty Area: Puppies are trained to use a specific "potty box" with scented pee pads and a fine grate, teaching them where to relieve themselves.
- Transition to Pine Pellets: As they grow, we transition them from pee pads to pine pellets, reinforcing clean habits.
- Clean Living Spaces: Their bedding is frequently changed, and any accidents are cleaned immediately to encourage natural cleanliness.
This early potty training sets the stage for fast, successful housebreaking when they transition to their new homes.
Puppy Culture Training: Socialization & Confidence Building
We follow Puppy Culture, a structured socialization program that introduces puppies to new experiences, environments, and people in a controlled and positive way.
By the time our puppies go home, they will have:
- Experienced 7 different surfaces (grass, tile, carpet, wood, etc.)
- Explored 7 new locations (house, backyard, vet office, car rides, etc.)
- Met 7 different types of people (children, adults, elderly, vet staff, etc.)
- Overcome 7 challenges (stairs, tunnels, ball pits, obstacle courses, etc.)
- Eaten from 7 different containers in 7 different places
Puppy Culture also helps introduce:
- Crate training for comfort and security
- Leash training for confident walks
- Basic manners & impulse control
These early experiences help ensure our puppies adapt easily to their new homes and thrive as well-mannered companions.
Temperament Testing: Finding the Best Match for Your Home
At 49 days old, each puppy undergoes the Volhard Temperament Test, which provides insight into their personality traits.
This evaluation helps us determine:
- Which puppies are best suited for therapy or service work
- Which puppies may be more independent or adventurous
- Which puppies have calm, well-balanced personalities perfect for family life
Families receive a copy of their puppy’s temperament evaluation, offering a valuable blueprint for training and development.
