4 Tips and Tricks for Downsizing With a Pet

Our friend Cindy at www.ourdogfriends.org was kind enough to write an article for us with some tips and tricks for downsizing or moving with your pet! We hope you’ll find the info useful!

While the decision to downsize may have to do with relieving stress, saving money or being nearer to loved ones, the reality of a major transition can be overwhelming. Especially when you have pets who rely on you for shelter, routine and companionship, your moving to-do list just gets longer. However, thinking ahead and having a plan for your move is key to making sure you and your non-human dependent are safe and comfortable throughout the transition. So here are some tips from Creekside Doodles to help you do just that.

1. Get Your Home Appraised

If you’ve lived in your current home for a long time, there’s bound to be pet evidence. Whether it’s floor scratches, dog hair or a lingering scent from a litter box, you can be sure that prospective buyers won’t want to pay top dollar for a pet-damaged dwelling. A property appraiser can give you the best idea of how to get your home ready for sale. If you have enough time, you can make repairs and updates to increase its value.

Also, make sure you keep a portfolio that contains necessary permits and receipts, as well as before-and-after photos of your work to document the changes.

2. Hire Movers Who Can Meet Your Expectations

According to census data, adults in the U.S. can expect to relocate an average of nine times in their lives. Moving is a big business across the country, and when searching for a service to help with your relocation, you likely have many options. While there are many reputable moving companies out there, there are also rogue movers and scammers.

It’s important to do your homework, verify credentials and insist on a written estimate before accepting a quote. You need to know if they can accommodate your 7-foot cat tower or your 500-gallon fish tank, and a legitimate moving company will send a representative to inspect your belongings and answer your questions. Additionally, be sure to look at the online customer reviews and search complaint registries.

3. Find a Home That Accommodates Your Needs

One of the most important aspects of downsizing is learning to live simpler without sacrificing sensibility or comfort. After you’ve decluttered your home and rented a storage unit, you’ll need to decide how much space is just enough for you and your pet to live healthily and happily ever after. Before buying or renting your next home, consider the following questions:

  • Can you afford the rent/mortgage plus utilities and maintenance costs?
  • Is the home in good condition?
  • Is there enough space for you and your pet to live and maneuver comfortably?
  • Is there a fenced-in yard for your dog or cat?
  • Is the community pet-friendly?

4. Visit Your Veterinarian

While you’re packing boxes and planning your route to your new city, it’s important to also monitor and address your pet’s health. Pet boarding facilities, hotels and property managers usually require animals to be up-to-date on all vaccinations. Additionally, even if your furry best friend is generally outgoing and adventurous, he or she may suffer from anxiety during all the hustle and bustle of a major move. Your vet can prescribe medications to help your pet relax through the process.

While you’re busy making major life decisions, it’s important to remember that the special critters in your life rely on you to make the best choices for their health and wellness. Use these tips to help you remain mindful and focused throughout the downsizing process.
