What is an Bordoodle?

What is a Bordoodle?

A Bordoodle is a hybrid breed, a cross between a Border Collie and a Poodle. But why mix these two breeds? Wouldn’t that create a high-energy dog that’s difficult to manage? Not necessarily—when bred correctly, a Bordoodle is a highly intelligent, trainable, and affectionate dog with a wonderful temperament.

Border Collies are widely regarded as one of the smartest dog breeds in the world. They thrive on problem-solving and learning new skills. However, their intelligence comes with a high drive that can be overwhelming for first-time owners.

Poodles, also highly intelligent, tend to be more easygoing than Border Collies. They are social, happy, and athletic but don’t require a job at all times.

When bred thoughtfully, Bordoodles inherit the best qualities of both breeds, resulting in a dog that is smart, eager to please, and well-suited for family life, therapy work, or even service roles.

01. Are Bordoodles Good Family Pets?

Yes! Bordoodles make wonderful family companions. They are affectionate, playful, and love being part of daily activities. They are quick learners and adapt well to household routines.

They enjoy adventures, but they’re just as happy lounging on the couch. If you’re looking for a dog that’s fun to train, great with children, and friendly with guests, a Bordoodle is a fantastic choice.

02. Do Bordoodles Need a Lot of Exercise?

They love activities like hiking, agility, and flyball, but they don’t need to be constantly working. While they enjoy staying active, they aren’t a high-drive breed that must have a job at all times,

  • RDaily Walks - One or two long walks per day
  • RTraining Sessions - Mental stimulation tires them out
  • RBackyard Playtime - Fetch, agility, or interactive games

If your family enjoys walks and the occasional adventure, a Bordoodle will fit right in. However, if you’re looking for a low-energy, couch-potato dog, this may not be the right breed for you.

03. Are Bordoodle Coats Allergy-Friendly?

Sometimes! Like all doodles, Bordoodles may inherit the low-shedding qualities of the Poodle, but there are no guarantees.

  • RF1B and multigenerational Bordoodles (which have more Poodle genetics) are more likely to be non-shedding.
  • RIf allergies are a concern, meet the puppy first before committing.

Regardless of coat type, Bordoodles require regular grooming. Expect to brush them frequently and schedule professional grooming every 4-6 weeks to prevent matting.

04. Is a Bordoodle the Right Dog for You?

Bordoodles are smart, social, and energetic, but they aren’t for everyone. Ask yourself:

  • RAm I prepared to train a highly intelligent dog that loves to learn?
  • RCan I provide daily exercise and mental stimulation?
  • RAm I willing to commit to regular grooming?
  • RDo I want a dog that is friendly, social, and loves people?

If you answered yes, a Bordoodle might be the perfect addition to your family. They are affectionate, adaptable, and eager to please—but they do require attention, training, and care. If you’re ready for an intelligent companion, you won’t regret choosing a Bordoodle!
