Aussie doodle sitting

AussieDoodles are a loyal, loving breed and would be a great addition to an active family who wants to include their dog in their adventures.

The Aussiedoodle is a mix of Australian Shepherd and poodle. This is not to be confused with (but often is) the Australian Labradoodle (ALD). The ALD is a mix of 6 parent breeds including the Curly Coated Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Standard Poodle, American Cocker Spaniel, English Cocker Spaniel and Irish Water Spaniel.  In contrast, our Aussiedoodles are a mixture of two breeds only; the Australian Shepherd which is a herding breed typically used with cattle, and the Poodle which has historically been used as a water retriever much like the Labrador or Golden Retriever.

Our Aussiedoodles inherit their spunk and independence largely from the Australian Shepherd. Aussies are widely known to be wonderful family dogs as long as they get enough exercise and training. Aussies are affectionate and cuddly with people they trust but may not act that way at all with strangers. They’re loyal family members and make excellent jogging or hiking partners due to their high energy levels, which is to be expected from a herding breed.

Keep in mind that these dogs were bred to herd and maneuver cattle for long hours each day. Aussies use their voice and often their teeth to herd those cattle, so you may find that typically our Aussiedoodle are a bit more vocal than some of the other doodle breeds. With training this can be easily managed but it is something to consider when you are thinking about getting an Aussiedoodle.

Aussiedoodles also inherit some of the goofy nature and intelligence of their Poodle side. Poodles are consistently listed in the top 3 most intelligent dog breeds and Australian shepherds are no slouches in the brains department either. This makes for a wonderfully intelligent dog in the Aussiedoodle. Aussiedoodles are eager to learn new things and excel at dog sports. We’ve had several go on to do emotional support as well as therapy work too.

Aussiedoodles have thick and luxurious coats. This makes them look and feel a bit like a stuffed animal. Because of the dense undercoat of the Australian Shepherd this coat needs to be maintained with daily brushing and regular visits to a professional groomer. The coat is generally allergy friendly and low shed to non-shedding depending on the generation and coat type of the pup you are looking at. It is NOT however, low maintenance.

Potential Aussiedoodle families need to keep in mind that grooming expenses will be frequent and necessary to keep the dog’s coat in good shape and keep that adorable doodle look everyone adores.

We find that our Aussiedoodles can be happy in a variety of homes and lifestyles so long as the new owners are committed to giving the dogs the mental and physical exercise they will require daily. Given the training they need, Aussiedoodles make calm, well mannered family members. They are a great addition to an active family who wants to include their dog in their adventures.

Currently we raise F1 and F1b Aussiedoodles in standard, medium and mini sizes.
