Spooky Season is here! With that come a ton of fun fall activities, cooler weather, bonfires and of course Trick-or-treating! And of course your four legged buddy wants to join in all the fun right? Here are some tips for a safe Halloween with your pup during this busy season.
1. Candy is NOT for dogs! The temptation to share some of your or your child’s Halloween treats may be strong but don’t. Many candies are toxic to dogs, including all types of chocolate. Even those sugar free candies you might get are no good for your pup. The xylitol that could be in them is very dangerous for him. It’s best to take along some dog approved and safe treats just for your furry buddy. He’ll appreciate the gesture and you’ll be sure he isn’t eating anything that might be a problem for him.
2. Make sure the costume you choose for your furry friend fits well. Be sure the costume doesn’t have any dangly or otherwise tempting parts for your dog to chew off and be sure the fabric fits comfortably so your buddy will be content during the festivities.
2. Be sure your dog’s ID tags are up to date and attached to his collar. Halloween can be hectic and busy. It’s possible your furry friend could slip out the front door unnoticed Having up to date ID will make it easier for him to find his way home.
4. Give your dog a safe space. Especially if your dog is wary of strangers, make sure he has somehwere quiet to go to get away from the stress and bustle of busy autumn get togethers. Be sure your guests are aware of your furry friend so that they don’t accidentally let him out the door either.
5. Don’t leave your dog outside for extended time periods. It doesn’t have to be the dead of winter to be cold. For pups, senior dogs and very small dogs, chilly fall nights might be too much. A nice warm dog bed in the house or a coat/sweater when outside might also make him more comfortable.
